William Troost-Ekong has opened up on his own goal in the Super Eagles’ 2-1 defeat to Mexico in an international friendly game in the early hours of Sunday.
In an attempt to clear a dangerous cross, Troost-Ekong slotted it past Francis Uzoho to restore Mexico’s lead.

Cyriel Dessers has drawn the Eagles level who went behind early in the first half.
And speaking in Wednesday’s pre-match press conference ahead of their second friendly against Ecuador on Friday, Troost-Ekong said:”I would love to score an actual goal than an own goal. It happens. It’s part of my job I’m always trying to defend the goal. Like I said I’m proud of the team’s performance  I’m very happy to see the debutants play.

“Of course we would have loved to win that game but we have got a new chance tomorrow to do that. (Own goal) It’s part of football and we have to keep it moving and always improve.”
Troost-Ekong pointed out that despite the loss to Mexico, there are lots of positives to take from the game.
“There is a lot of positives we can take from the game against Mexico and besides the result it was a great opportunity for us to play against a big team In a big stadium. We had a lot of new players that are here for the first time. 
“It was a game of two halves, in the first half we all agreed we should have done better but we still tried to find out feet in a new system. In the second half everything fell into place a lot better.
Troost-Ekong added:”There’s a lot of positives to take from that game and towards the AFCON qualifiers the game against Ecuador is going to be similar. 
“We are going to play against a very good team again and we would try and use this opportunity to improve even more and be ready for our important games back in Africa.”
